MUCH HAS AND IS BEING MADE ABOUT "INSIGHT." IN SOME
CORNERS, WHAT WAS ONCE CALLED "MARKETING
RESEARCH" BECAME "BRAND STRATEGY." AND NOW,
"INSIGHT" SEEMS TO BE ALL THE "RAGE", WHICH HAS
PROMPTED MANY A DISCUSSION ON WHAT INSIGHT IS -- TO
WHICH I ADD MY "TAKE."
Insight is both the talent and gift to look inside oneself to answer,
interpret, understand and make sense of external events, stimuli,
questions, etc., and it's the output from looking inside oneself to
answer, interpret... So, it's both process and product.
It's what the character played by Melanie Griffith in the movie
Working Girl had when she obtained disparate information from three
disparate sources and connected the dots to identify a business
opportunity.
It, IMO, is "something" that one has the propensity for from birth
and which is sharpened and honed by their life experiences with
obviously, the richer and more diverse those experiences (and the
people one meets), the greater the likelihood of providing insight that
is deeper, richer and more "right-on."
Insight is seeing things others don't. Patterns in chaos. Connecting
dots. Not just thinking outside of the "box" but outside of the room.
Asking questions of oneself like "what's it all about Alfie?" or "Is this
all there is?"
Insight is something that may be hard to explain to others and so the
challenge for the more insightful people is to get the less
insightful to see what they do -- especially when they're people in
responsible and authoritative positions -- like a client! 8-).
Insight is not just understanding what. It's also understanding
why and so what?
Insight is not a methodology. It's not an approach. It's not a room,
studio, training facility. And, it's not about how many different
sources of data or information one utilizes.
It's more about understanding people than interpreting or
analyzing data. And, it's more than marketing. It's about life!
It's a gift, a talent, an ability. And, while we all may have a propensity
for insight from birth, others are simply more gifted than others. Just
the way it is. Hmmm, wonder why?
